In 1964, Michigan State University signed a contract with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to create a research program in plant sciences and a building to house it. In 1966, the Plant Science Laboratory building was completed. In 1975, AEC was replaced by the broader based Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), which was, in turn, replaced by the Department of Energy in 1978. The name of the Laboratory changed each time, from MSU-AEC to MSU-ERDA, and finally to MSU-DOE.
