Historical Note
Wrestling is believed to have started at Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) as a field day event in 1884. The first competitive wrestling event against other schools is thought to have taken place in 1886. Wrestling was then a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference sport from 1886 to 1906. Wrestling was revived in 1921 and continues to this day.
