Content Description

The Arthur H. Tonn collection consists of a scrapbook created by Tonn. Included are photographs and ephemera relating to his childhood and school in Detroit; photos of airplanes; images of the Port Austin Michigan area; photos, newspaper clippings, and ephemera from Tonn’s time in the Army Air Force, including information related to travel and the Lackland Air Base in Texas; also included are photos of a parade celebrating Detroit's 250th anniversary. The collection further consists of ephemera and photographs from Tonn’s time as a student at Michigan State College, including student activity cards, athletic and event tickets, photographs, and a veteran supply card. Of note are photographs and ephemera from a trip to the 1954 Rose Bowl.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur H. Tonn was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 17, 1928 to parents Hermann and Katherine Tonn. After graduating from Barbour Intermediate School in 1943 and Eastern High School in 1946, Tonn enlisted in the Army Air Force and served from 1946-1949 at the Lackland Air Base in Texas. Following his enlistment, Tonn returned to Michigan where he attended Michigan State College from 1949-1953, was an active member of the Dionysians, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, followed by a Masters in Psychology from Michigan State in 1954. With the completion of his education, Tonn was offered a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Medical Service Corps, which he accepted. Tonn was stationed at Kimpo Air Base in Korea during the Korean War, and would later serve in the Vietnam War, eventually earning the rank of Major. Tonn married Ursula E. Oehm, and together they lived in Haslett, Michigan until his passing on May 20, 2018.
