Biographical / Historical

Daniel P. Jones graduated from Michigan State University (MSU) with a bachelor's degree in landscape horticulture in the spring of 1981. During his time at MSU, Jones was involved in promoting gay rights. In 1976, he was a panel coordinator for the Gay Council and later became the director of the ASMSU Gay Council. He was involved in many educational programs both on and off campus during his directorship. Jones also worked as a staff researcher for the Residence Hall Programs Office and spoke to residence hall staff about sensitivity training and consultation services.

In 1978, Jones ran for the position of ASMSU President and won. According to the National Gay Task Force, this was just the second time an openly gay man was elected president at a major American university. Jones captured 3,436 votes; his nearest rival had 2,936 votes.
