Scope and Contents

The records of the Department of Residence Life contain materials related to student housing including women’s housing, cooperative housing, faculty housing, married students and veteran housing. Also included are materials for training of residence hall staff, residence assistants and minority aides. In addition, there are newspaper clippings and slides of images of campus and the surrounding area. There are also hall policies which include procedures, committees, space use, floor plans as well as constitutions and information about residence hall student organizations. Organizations include hall government, clubs, and black caucus. The scrapbooks in the collection contain activity reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, and programs from events.

Historical Note

Dormitories for men and women were administered separately and respectively by the Dean of Students for Men and the Dean of Students for Women. Around 1946, the Student Housing office was created in the Dean of Students Department.

In 1963, the Division of Residence Hall Student Services was created within the Dean of Students Department and the Housing Assignment Office was disbanded. Additional offices were also created for off-campus housing. In 1964, the name changed to Division of Residence Hall Programs and off-campus housing was administered by the Division of Student Activities and Off Campus Housing. In 1978, the name changed to University Housing Programs. In 1993, the name changed to Residence Life.
