Historical Note
The Agricultural Experiment Station program was started at the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan in 1888. The 1887 Hatch Act established agricultural experiment stations that were designed to benefit farmers by developing innovations and technological advances. These stations were established nationwide as part of the land grant college system. Home economics, agricultural economics and rural sociology were added to the mission of the experiment stations by the 1925 Purnell Act. As of 2012, 15 field research stations associated with the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station network existed throughout the state. The Agricultural Experiment Station was renamed AgBio Research.
