Scope and Contents

The Mary Jo Tormey collection contains photocopies of newspaper clippings that were collected between April 8, 1977 and December 18, 1977. The collection also contains two copies of posters. The collected documents cover the trial of Francine Hughes, of Dansville, Michigan, for the murder of her husband in March 1977. Many of the articles cover the support of Hughes as domestic violence became more of a public issue in the United States.

Biographical Note

Mary Jo Tormey was born February 25, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio. She earned a A.B. from Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio (1944), and a M.S.L.S. from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (1960). She served as a law librarian for Baker, Hostetler, and Patterson law firm from 1952 to 1966, and then joined the National Bank of Detroit, now known as Chase Bank, from 1967 to 1971. She was hired in May 1971 as a Librarian in the Reference Department of the Michigan State University Library. Tormey was also in charge of the library’s law collection. Following her retirement in 1989, she and her mother moved to Farmington, Connecticut to be closer to her sister. She remained in Connecticut until her death on February 3, 2018.
