Scope and Contents

The records consist of graduate and undergraduate handbooks, biographical files and subject files compiled by Frank Dennis about the history of the department, Horticulture Farm logs, newsletters, research notes, Sodus Horticultural Experiment Station Annual Reports for 1976 and 1984, short course yearbooks, cherry research summaries, cherry research conference summaries, horticulture demonstration gardens materials, materials related to Harold Gaston, brochures, and some curriculum materials. The collection also contains photographs including some used by Frank Dennis in the department history book "From Seed to Fruit" as well as published and unpublished annual reports. The Electronic Resources includes issues of the e-newsletter "MSU Horticulture Garden News" from 2009 to 2014. Also included are oral histories of horticulture faculty interviewed by Frank Dennis. The interviews are on audio cassettes. Some of the interviews also have a synopsis of the interview but not a full transcription.

Historical Note

Horticulture classes were first taught in 1858 and were taught with botany classes. In 1872, the Botany Department changed its name to the Department of Botany and Horticulture. Horticulture became a separate department in 1883 and remains its own department today in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
