Scope and Contents

The George Bouyoucos papers contain speeches he gave to the Agronomy Club and Sigma Xi, the paper “Plaster of Paris Block Electrical Measuring Unit for Making a Continuous Measurement of Soil Moisture Under Field Conditions,” and his obituary. Also included is professional correspondence, a list of Bouyoucos’ publications, and an advertisement for his moisture meter. The collection also includes photographs including images of Bouyoucos conducting field research.

Biographical Note

George John Bouyoucos was born in Greece circa 1890. He came to the United States when he was eleven years old. He learned English at Hull House in Chicago. He earned his B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1908. He earned Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1911, the same year that he joined the faculty at Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in the Soil Science Department. He was internationally known for his soil moisture measuring work. He received a number of awards for his work including the Cross of our Savior and the Cross of Phoenix, both from Greece. He died on June 15, 1981.
