Scope and Contents

Colombia Project records include official and special reports on the Project; contracts between Michigan State University and the University of Colombia, as well as contracts with funding bodies, the Universities of Medellin and Palmira, and other involved organizations; work plans dealing with specific agricultural or economic issues; and reports pertaining to the Point Four Program and to the Kellogg Foundation. These records include a variety of materials related to agriculture, including correspondence, reports, curricula, and notes pertaining to the Commission on Higher Education in Agriculture and to specific agricultural techniques, especially in Colombia. Publications include maps, clippings, and papers (primarily in Spanish) and four volumes of the Acta Agronomica (1951; 1954; 1955).

Correspondence is from project personnel, Deans of the Universities of Medellin and Palmira, Colombian students in the project, and pertains to Colombia, agriculture, and project policies. Correspondence files include sub series for letters of John Hannah, Earl Weaver, Maurice Perkins, and John Stone. Expense records are primarily expense vouchers and budget records, some of which pertains to the Colombian economy in comparison with that of the United States.

Also included are five scrapbooks containing photographs of Colombia and the project. There are also photograph files that include people involved with the project, images of Colombia, National University at Palmira, and Piedras Blancas Forestry Station, University at Medellin.

Historical Note

The Colombia Project began in 1951, and took place during the tenure of Michigan State University President John A. Hannah. It was dedicated to improving agricultural practices and education in Colombia.
