Included are files, photographs, illustrations, newspaper clippings, articles, realia and memorabilia focused on artists, exhibits, political events, political parties - such as La Raza Unida - and business ventures in broadcasting and communications. Of particular note is the history of the flags in Series 5. These flags were those flown over the Zavala County Courthouse on the eve of the La Raza Unida Party (LRUP) defeating the incumbents. Biographical / Historical

The flags were those flown over the Zavala County Courthouse on the eve of the La Raza Unida Party (LRUP) defeating the incumbents. LRUP won city and county-wide elections, ousting an all-white minority administration and winning control of the Crystal City school board, the mayor’s office, the office of the drainage commissioner and county judgeships. After being lowered, the Texas flag was decorated with a silk-screening of the LRUP logo and came into the possession of Gilberto V. Martinez (along with this U.S. flag). The Texas flag was later loaned out for use in Chicano civil rights marches as far north as Wisconsin.
