Sansei (third generation) Japanese children playing marbles., April 9, 1942

 Item — Folder: 1

Scope and Contents

Photograph of six children. Two small boys crouch on the ground shooting marbles. An older boy to the left and three young girls in the background watch them.

The text on the back of the photograph reads "Doesn't seem to be anything to smile about. Arcadia, Cal.: These children are Sansei (third generation Japanese). They were born in the United States as were their parents, children of Japanese immigrants. They play American games, think American but are among the scores of Japanese evacuees living in the Santa Anita reception center. They are very serious, even as they play, as you can see."
