Interviews, Futa Toro (A-D), 1968-1969

 File — Box: 8, Folder: 1-5

Scope and Contents

This is my largest collection which served as an important basis for the dissertation and the resulting volume, Chiefs and Clerics: Abdul Bokar Kane and the History of Futa Toro (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1975). A small number of excerpts from the collection, with Pulaar transcription and English translation, were used to tell the “history” of Futa Toro in Moustapha Kane and David Robinson, The Islamic Regime of Fuuta Tooro. An Anthology of Oral Tradition Transcribed in Pulaar and Translated into English (Michigan State University, African Studies Center, 1984). My initial interviewing focused on the upper half of Futa, corresponding to the Department of Matam, while James Johnson (PhD, Wisconsin, 1974) worked on the lower river area corresponding to the Department of Podor. I subsequently did some interviewing in the Podor Department as well. Most informants were comfortable being recorded on cassette. The originals are in the Archives of Traditional Music (ATM) at Indiana University. Open reel copies were left at IFAN (see the remarks on CLAD below), the University of Dakar, but they have since disappeared. I also have open reel copies, made in Bloomington, Indiana, and they are offered in the collection here. I did not make transcriptions of the Pulaar. The translations usually contain 2 numbers in the upper left corner. The first is a number for CLAD, the Centre Linguistique Appliquée de Dakar, a French organization which was then housed at IFAN and in other parts of the university. CLAD was accessing collections at IFAN at the time (late 1960s) and was interested in African languages as well as the teaching of French. The second number, located further towards the center of the page, is my cassette numbering, in the order of interviewing. The open reels made in Bloomington should correspond to the cassette numbering. The translations are organized, however, by last name of the informant. The translations were made by several Haal-Pulaar that I worked with in Dakar, and especially Ibrahima Ly, a young Dakar man who hailed from a family of Salde, a town and former French post in the middle of Futa. They are not literal translations, and involve no transcriptions of the Pulaar. I think the quality in general is reliable. The translators name is given at the beginning of the typed copy, along with the subjects treated in the interview, the date, location and some other information. James Johnson and I published indexes as “Deux fonds d’histoire orale sur le Fouta Toro,” Bulletin de l’IFAN, series B, vol 31, no 1 (1969): 120-137; and “Supplément au Fonds Robinson d’histoire orale du Fouta Toro,” vol 32, no 3 (1970):767-769. A copy of the first offprint is in the first folder of Futa Toro (1968-69) texts. A copy of the second is in Supplement folder.
