The Jeanne Marie Velickovic collection contains newspaper clippings and documents relating to the transition to democracy in South Africa.

Most of the newspaper clippings are bound and arranged chronologically and by theme. South African newspapers clipped or bound comprise: Business Day, Citizen, City Press, New Nation, Pretoria News, South, Sowetan, Sunday Tribune, Star (including Africa Star/Sunday Star), Vrye Weekblad, and Weekly Mail.

Some official publications and internal documents also included, as are numerous copies of articles or documents in contemporary political publications.

The main focus is political actors and processes in South Africa during the time of transition to democracy. Organizations covered include the ANC (and ANC alliance), COSATU, Azapo, Azanla, Inkatha Freedom Party, PAC, National Party, United Democratic Front (UDF), right-wing conservative parties, youth organizations, ANC Women League, labor unions, etc. Homelands are also covered (Transkei, Ciskei, Venda, etc). Political cartoons are also included.

Topics include the armed struggle, violence, mass action, major politicians, academics, political commentaries by newspapers, main speeches and policy proposals, legislation, conflict and political violence in Natal/KwaZulu, divisions within political organizations, conferences of ANC and NP, political debates and discussion points (e.g., on democracy, nationalization, unitary or federal forms of government, composition of a constituent assembly).

Strategies of organizations are covered (e.g., mass action, boycotts, use of violence, negotiations, concessions, demands) as well as important events and outcomes, such as assassination of political leaders, negotiations being stalled, parliamentary election results, peace talks, political alliances, multiparty conferences and proposals that led to an interim government, and political/constitutional proposals of the various parties.
