Communities of color and genetics policy project, 1999-2001
Scope and Contents
The John J. Castillo papers includes materials from projects that Castillo and his firm worked on and developed. This includes work with the Human Genome Project, Communities of Color and Genetics Policy Project, the Latino Genetics Community Consultation Network and other diversity projects. Of particular note in the collection are two reports "Buildng a Balanced Library Collection", February 1972 which includes the script of Castillo's remarks, and a report by Melvin Villarreal, PhD titled "Chicano Secondary School Student in the Lansing School District, A Descriptive Study, 1973-1974." Included in this collection is a file of correspondence to and from José P. Gamez, a collaborator on several Castillo and Associates projects. Gamez was an employee of Michigan State University and the State of Michigan and was a business owner in the Lansing community. His folders include correspondence from those activities as well as several from MSU President Clifton Wharton (1970-1978).

Abstract
Folders include notebooked information on a symposium held and sponsored by the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Included are organizational charts and participant rosters, time line, project summary and minutes. The notebook includes correspondence from Castillo inviting participation from the Latino community to volunteer to learn about topics such as discrimination and genetic screening, access to genetic technology and values and genetic counseling. The project was a collaborative effort between the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Tuskegee University and several community-based organizations in Michigan and Alabama. Also included is a two-page letter and survey to elicit information. The folder also includes a summary report by Leonard Fleck, PhD, Michigan State University with dialogue facilitator José Gamez. The report summarizes conclusions, policy recommendations and justification from each of the community dialogue groups held in 2000.
