Pleasant Dreams, Addy
Scope and Contents
Addy Walker is an American Girl doll depicting an African-American enslaved girl who escaped to freedom in 1864. At the beginning of the accompanying book, Addy is a nine year old girl living on a plantation in North Carolina. After her brother and father are sold, Addy and her mother escape through the Underground Railroad to Philadelphia. In later books, Addy learns that freedom in the North does not mean equality and fairness. With a historically... accurate wooden trunk, bed, and adornments, Addy was designed to help children imagine the life of an African American girl who escaped slavery during the American Civil War.
