Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Chilean zine collection represent a variety of independent artists and publishers. A corpus of punk literary aesthetic, these zines are often produced in black and white but are full of energetic zeal for DIY publishing. Often crude and self-published, these zines range from the vulgar to the quotidian. Some creators opt to use their zines as a platform to voice opinions that run counterpoint to the mainstream. It is no wonder that themes of death and youth rebellion run rampant in the collection. Many of these groups associated themselves with a progressive agenda, denouncing racism, discrimination, corruption and other social/political/economic maladies. Although this stance of pure defiance is a hallmark of the zine, there is a brighter side to this phenomenon. Many creators channel their creative energy into creating zines that amuse or to share some aspect of their life with an unknown reader. Certainly, a common thread that runs throughout all these humble publications is a great deal of intimacy, the likes of which is absent from mainstream or larger publications. These were illustrated and assembled by hand; the form and content capturing a fleeting moment in the life of the creator.
