Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Often associated with the underground music and counter-cultures, zines have become the format of choice for a number of independent artists and writers who seek an affordable and easily distributable means of self-expression. Zines are incredibly flexible, straddling both high and low-brow culture; lending itself to one or the other or both simultaneously. Clara-Iris Ramos' oversized "De lo que no se puede hablar hay que callar" uses supermarket receipts to reproduce one of Wittgenstein's most iconic passages from his early work with linguistics. Mosquita Muerta (of which volumes 1 and 2 are included in this collection) is an anonymously authored zine that illustrates the un-glamorous life—and death—of a housefly. Benkoz is a multi-volume, modern version of the life of Benkos Bioho—a runaway slave who was executed for walking into Cartagena—which imagines his re-birth in the modern day. This collection also includes a number of leftist tracts which passionately describe the projects of South American anti-capitalists.
