Letter to Taylor from Leverett, July 23, 1907
Scope and Contents
The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General
Rec'd letters from you & Goldthwait this AM. Question about doing Mullet Lake if he is to be at Manistee by 24th. I have been fixing some maps for you on Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, & Allegan Co. Perhaps I can join you both at Muskegon and spend 1-2 days. You are liable to get lost in those woods without a guide and McLouth was with me most of the time. I need only be with you for the district E of Muskegon. Discussion of data on maps being sent. Look for continuation of till ridge from Pentwater Lake southward. Position of Calumet beach is tentative near Pentwater because brush is too thick to know which section you are in. Not sure if Calumet beach runs E or W of Silver Lake. Calumet beach approximate location marked in green on Muskegon and Ottawa maps. Toleston beach is covered by sand dunes in Ottawa Co. Glenwood indicated by purple lines but needs to identified correctly from Ravenna S. I have tried to correlate moraines with blue lines to bridge the gaps but there is some uncertainty in certain areas. There seems to be an abnormal line of the ice margin near Brewery Hill in Muskegon needs clarification. Does evidence of underlying clay with some pebbles indicate a morainic deposit or a lake feature? Very puzzling districts I have had to interpret. Hobbs told me he offered to give $100 from Lane to Goldthwait so he could keep working on east side until he can join Hobbs and work with him about Aug. 5th. Lane says Gregory is now working; Gregory should keep in touch with Goldthwait's results. Other comments on drainage and outlets.
