Letter to Taylor from Leverett, June 26, 1911
Scope and Contents
The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General
After working in the UP, I now have the highest Algonquin beach identified and traced to near Munising, and the highest Duluth beach traced to E of L'Anse. Duluth beach is nearly 1200' at Arvon. Correlative moraine runs 1.5-3 miles S of Superior shore from Skanee E to Huron River, then N along Huron Mountains at 200-250' above Lake Superior. Highest Algonquin beach is nearly 400' above Lake Superior, or 1000' AT. At Munising, highest Algonquin is about 930'. I traced old lake bluff rising 50-60' above storm beach for 10 miles. Rate of uplift is about 4 ft/mile from Rapid River to shore of Superior near Munising. Isobase run 8-10 degrees S of E from Marquette to Munising. It is probable that nearly all area around Grand Marais was below Lake Algonquin so the beach there was far below lake level. I may do more work there later in the season to use in a report on the whole Superior region. I am back now to finish the soil report for Allen, hopefully by July 4th. Mrs. Leverett & I will go to Mackinac Island by boat and hope to meet you and Mrs Taylor there on the 8th. We will be going right on to Minneapolis that night, from St Ignace to Trout Lake at 5.45 PM. I have an assistant from the University of Minnesota to begin work on July 10th, so I must hurry through, but I hope we spend 3-4 hours with you on the Island. Let us know if you will be there.
