Letter to Taylor from Leverett, September 24, 1911
Scope and Contents
The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General
I spent this past week working the Lake Agassiz beach in NE Itasca and adjoining counties. Agassiz beach is 1285' at delta of Big Fork River, and almost the same at Bear River. I will go to International Falls to get a prairie altitude where the RR crosses the highest beach. With the beach at 1348-1350' at Kinnevent(?) there is 65' of uplift over a distance of 40 miles. From Bear River to Kinnesent(?) is 35 miles and I infer an uplift there of more than 2 feet/mile. Also I have worked out the moraines here and find the ice didn't receede as Upham thought. I presume Agassiz discharged into Lake Duluth after it drained down too low to go S into Minnesota Valley. I want to go to Canada next year and settle the matter, as it is too late this season to visit Lac Seule. I inclose an advertisement for a new curative establishment in Fort Wayne. I hope you are having a good season for work. I will be out for a month or more in MN.
