Letter to Taylor from Leverett, December 8, 1911
Scope and Contents
The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General
Rec'd your letter and Indiana Academy program; there are several interesting titles. I finished the glacial part of the Southern Peninsula map except Arenac Co. I don't know where the faint moraines are near Twining and Turner. There are two moraines listed on my copy of the 1:1,000,000 map but there are no identifying towns or township lines, so I am likely to err in putting the moraines on this larger scale map. I have the other moraines along the Huron shore past Alabaster and in the NW part of the county. Will you put in the shorelines in red ink on the Nillist map for the entire peninsula? If you can send this revision in early next week, or otherwise the map may have to go to the printer without your revision. Did you see Calvin's paper on the Iowan drift in Journal of Geology? Chamberlin published it under an agreement to make no comments. The worst things were cut out. It is a good thing it did not appear in the GSA Bulletin with all the sarcastic remarks in it.
