Letter to Taylor from Leverett, May 6, 1913
Scope and Contents
The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General
Since I wrote you Sherzer & I have found pretty good evidence that the Birmingham moraine continues as a waterlaid moraine from Birmingham SW to Oakland-Wayne county line. This would be important to add to our text and to the maps. I will get the moraine added to the maps but you will need to put the text reference in the proper place. It may only be necessary to state that Sherzer & Leverett found evidence in 1913 that the moraine continues in waterlaid form along the east side of the Rouge River to the Wayne county line. I shall be glad to hear of any news from Washington and Toronto. I looked for you to perhaps stop on your way home. We shall be glad to see you and Mrs. Taylor any time. The May Festival starts next week. I will be in Minnesota on June 1st as soon as cooperation is worked out between the Survey and Minnesota Survey. The delays caused by the Sundy Civil Bill are a nuisance. I hope your Niagara work is completed by now so that you get a good breathing spell before hot weather.
