From the Collection:

The Andrés G. Guerrero papers (1971-1993) consist of documents and realia relating to Professor Guerrero’s interest in Chicano Liberation Theology and the Chicano civil rights movement. Of note is the commemorative flag from Cesar Chavez's funeral mass at St. Julia's church on May 2, 1993 in Austin, Texas. The items span from 1971 to 1993 and are in English. Interview recordings for his book A Chicano Theology have been digitized and are available through the MSU Kline Digital Media Center.

Abstract

Castillo was the Houston Texas, City Controller in 1971 and became the US Department of Education Secretary under President Jimmy Carter in 1977. Carter nominated Leonel Castillo as Commissioner of Immigration for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, making him the first Hispanic to hold that role and the first Hispanic appointed to President Carter's administration.
