Letter to Taylor from Leverett, February 11, 1917

 Item — Box: 2, Folder: 10

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General

Allen & I had a conference Friday on the quadrangles to be mapped this year. I mentioned your wish to have work done in the Thumb, and he said you should write him, as he has not heard from you about the Mackinac Island Report. You should write him about both of these topics. I suggested he map the two 15' quadrangles in Lenawee Co. that would connect the Ann Arbor Quad. with NW OH, showing the Maumee beaches. If this is done and if the IN part of the Maumee beaches is mapped, we would have a complete map of shore lines from Macomb Co. MI around Erie into NY. I will write the USGS Director this week to urge the topographic mapping of the Fort Wayne Quad, the quad E of it, and the quad W of Van Wert be done soon to show the turning of Lake Maumee shorelines into the Fort Wayne outlet. This is really important for teachers to use since it shows the Erie Basin once drained westward (into Mississippi River). Would you write Director Smith and Mr Alden urging the Fort Wayne Quad be done soon since Mr Allen will have the Grand River outlet mapped from Saginaw Basin to Grand Rapids by the end of the field season. He may even be able to map the area around Ubley and Imlay if we think it important and you write him. If only one outlet could be done this year, you might suggest whether Ubley or Imlay has priority. It might require 2 quads be done for the Ubley outlet, but only one for the Imlay, so I am inclined to the Imlay first. At Ann Arbor we are all interested in having the quads W of the city done. If the 2 quads W of the N half of the city are done, we might use topographic sheets along the electric line from here to Lansing. Allen says it will cost $25,000 but may be able to cut it to $15,000, but he can get a lot done for that amount. You should not hesitate to ask the Director to have the Fort Wayne quad done even if the IND legislature makes no appropriation. Teachers can see the value of such mapping and will be very interested in having the maps. A folio atlas for Fort Wayne would be even better.
