Letter to Taylor from Leverett, May 14, 1926

 Item — Box: 2, Folder: 19

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The correspondence series includes approximately 1100 letters written between 1892-1939. The majority of the collection are letters between Frank Leverett and Frank Bursley Taylor; they discuss their field work, Monograph 53, other publications and various related problems. There is also other correspondence with other geologists, including T.C. Chamberlin, Grove K. Gilbert, J.W. Goldthwait, H.L. Fairchild, et alia. There is extensive correspondence with the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Michigan Geological Survey. The primary subject of this series is the surficial glacial geology of the midwestern U.S. and Canada. Leverett & Taylor's work was essential for understanding how the Great Lakes were formed as the Pleistocene glaciers advanced and retreated from the midwestern states. The letters describe the 30 year process of gathering data, mapping the data and constructing the picture of glacial processes during the last Ice Age.

General

I inclose a letter from Case about the paper you submitted for publication by the Michigan Academy, and I return the paper & illustrations by separate envelope. I read the paper last night to the Geological Journal Club, and there was much interest and discussion of the evidence that uplift is still continuing and the lowering of lake level by enlarging the Port Huron outlet. Prof. Case indicates that there is not enough money to publish the papers that have been submitted, so authors are being asked to trim their papers down. Case & I both think you might condense the first 10-11 pages into 2 pages as it is largely old material. You need to indicate where the first 4 illustrations come in as there is no reference in the MS. Regarding the second paper, Case thinks if it is not too long and contains important new material, it could be fit into the current volume, but it needs to be sent in immediately by May 24th, as the papers are sent to the publisher at the end of May. You can, of course, publish the papers elsewhere without revision, but I think they could be brought down to a size that the Academy can publish without losing significant points. I plan on going to field work in the Upper Ohio Valley early in June and then work eastward to the Jerseyan deposits in eastern PA and NJ. Perhaps you will attend the Sesqui-centennial and visit some of the points of glacial interest with me while you are in the region. I hope you are getting in better condition as the warm weather come. You should return the MS to Dr. Peter Okkelberg, Dept of Zoology, Univ. of MIchigan. Attached letter from E.C. Case to Taylor regarding Taylor's MS and the need to eliminate older historical material for publication.
