Dr. Dora Yates collection, undated
Scope and Contents
The collection is comprised of photocopies of a library catalog that Yates created for the University of Liverpool Library while she worked there. The catalog is for a 3,000 volume collection of Gypsy literature named for Gypsy scholar Scott Macfie. The materials in this collection, as well as other manuscripts and correspondence, were removed from Yates' office upon her death and donated to the Gypsy Lore Society Victor Weybright Archives of Gypsy Studies.

Biographical / Historical
Dora Esther Yates grew up in Liverpool, England, where she was the youngest child in a large Jewish family. In 1900 she graduated with a Masters degree in English Language and Literature from Liverpool University College. She was the first Jewish woman to earn a Masters degree from an English university. Yates then taught English in schools for several years before taking a position as Curator of Special Collections at the Harold Cohen Library, where she catalogued the 3,000 volume Scott Macfie Collection of Gypsy Literature. After her retirement, Yates was awarded the position of Honorary Curator of the Scott Macfie Collection, and later she was rewarded an Honorary Doctorate of Literature in recognition of her academic achievement and services to the library. Dr. Yates died in 1974; throughout her career she was well known as a Romany scholar, as well as being a member and Officer of the Gypsy Lore Society in Liverpool.
