Biographical / Historical
Ernest Howard Crosby (1856-1907), American author, reformer, and jurist from New York. Graduate of New York University and Columbia Law School (1878), he assumed the seat of Theodore Roosevelt on the New York Assembly (1887-1889). He then was named a judge for the International Court in Alexandria, Egypt (1889-1893). Crosby left his post after four years due to a change in philosophical ideals, converting to a Tolstoyan view of non-violence, beginning his correspondence and friendship with Leo Tolstoy. Crosby supported a pacifist stance during the Spanish American war and published an array of Anti-Imperialist and Anti-Militarist publications alongside poetry and novels. He was also the President of the Anti-Imperialist League of New York and a member of the City Reform Club.
He was the son of Reverend Howard Crosby (1826-1891), the husband of Fanny Schieffelin Crosby (1860-1925), and the father of Maunsell Schieffelin Crosby (1887-1931).
