Biographical / Historical
In the 1980s, Kenneth Heineman contacted former members of student activist groups on the campus of Michigan State University and other state universities to compile and document the anti-Vietnam War activities on campus and the surrounding communities in preparation for his dissertation "To Undo the Heavy Burdens: A Comparative Study of the Anti-Vietnam War Movement at the Non-Elite State Universities (Kent State University, Michigan State University, Pennsylvania State University and the State University of New York at Buffalo)" and 1994 book: "Campus Wars." Often a coordinated effort by many groups on campus including the Students for a Democratic Society, University Christian Movement, and Weathermen, the student activitists implemented sit-ins and visible demonstrations, often clashing with MSU President Hannah's administration.
