Men's Studies Bibliography collection

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSS 227 large

Scope and Contents

The Men's Studies Bibliography collection contains articles listed in and used in production of the Men's studies bibliography originally created by the Human Studies Collection of the Humanities Library in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The collection consists of newspaper and journal articles, unpublished papers, and ephemera of both the Women’s Movement and the Men’s Movement. The material is divided into a women’s section (sample subject headings: education and socialization, sex role characteristics and differences, employment, sexuality, family, society and government, mental and physical health, and Women’s Liberation Movement) and a men’s section (sample subject headings: socialization – "masculinity," relationships and attitudes toward women, homosexuality, fatherhood and family, sexuality, and Men’s Liberation Movement).

The collection, which began as the private research collections of Robert Fein (McLean Hospital), Joseph Pleck (Wellesley College), and Mary Rowe (M.I.T.), now numbers over 2,500 items. Two grants, one from the Office of the President and Chancellor, M.I.T., and one from the R.K. Mellon Fund, administered by the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women in Higher Education and the Professions, provided for the updating of the collection and publication of catalogue bibliographies.

The collection continues to grow as scholars contribute materials relevant to their research, as well as their own publications. Further, the published literature is scanned regularly with an eye for appropriate additions. The result is a body of literature which reflects the current interests in both women’s and men’s issues and which also provides a broad background of information for the analysis of those issues.

The Men’s Studies Bibliography serves as a catalogue of the materials contained in the Men’s Studies Collection. The appendix to this edition is a bibliography of books relevant to the study of men. While the list is not exhaustive, it does provide a good overview of the current research situation.
