Biographical / Historical
Documents related to the arrest, trial and conviction of nine members of the Communist Party in Philadelphia who were accused of violating the Smith Act, which outlawed the teaching or advocating the overthrow of the American government, by force. The defendants were Benjamin Weiss, Sam Gobeloff, Walter Lowenfels, Joseph Kuzma, Robert Klonsky, Sherman Labovitz, Irvin Katz, David Dubensky, and Thomas Nabried. The collection includes newspaper articles, personal statements, legal documents, publications, pamphlets, newsletters.
