Biographical / Historical
Dignity began in 1969 in San Diego under Fr. Patrick Nidorf as a support group for all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons in the Catholic Church. In 1973, it became a national and independent nonprofit organization with chapters located throughout the United States. Dignity advocates for changes in Catholicism’s teaching on homosexuality, provides educational materials to interested groups, engages in dialogue with Church leaders, represents GLBT Catholics in the media, and presents a positive Catholic perspective on civil rights legislation.
