Biographical / Historical
A Century of Progress International Exposition, 1833-1933 was the name of the 1933-1934 World's Fair held in Chicago, Illinois. Four Native American tribes participated in the exposition: Sioux from North Dakota, Winnebago from Wisconsin, Navajos from New Mexico, and Hopis from Arizona. Native Americans from both the Great Plains and the Southwest are depicted in this collection of photographs from the exposition. They appear to be shown within a re-created American colonial village. One photograph emphasizes this juxtaposition by showing a Native American man with a spear and shield standing in front of a wooden cabin behind which looms an enormous Georgian-style bonded brick mansion.
