Scope and Contents

The Lansing Area Lesbian/Gay Hotline records consists of internal communications, brochures, and correspondence produced by volunteers of the hotline. It also includes reference materials used by volunteers of the hotline, such as local and regional lesbian and gay support group newsletters, flyers for events, announcements, and newspaper clippings.

Biographical / Historical

The Lansing Association for Human Rights (LAHR), established in 1979, started the Lansing Area Lesbian/Gay Hotline in 1981 as an information and crisis line serving central and lower Michigan. The mission of the Lansing Area Lesbian/Gay Hotline was to provides supportive services to the local Lesbian/Gay community, as well as to the families, friends, and co-workers of gay men and lesbians in the area. Lansing Area Lesbian/Gay Hotline volunteers were trained in crisis intervention, they were also familiar with medical and legal resources, as well as political, social, and religious organizations.

The Lansing Area Lesbian/Gay Hotline records were organized, conserved, and inventoried with funds provided by the American Radicalism Collection endowment fund in honor & memory of Dr. Beth J. Shapiro (2006).

Processing Information

Eli Landaverde reprocessed this collection in 2021, adapting legacy description from 2006, incorporating missing materials, and rehousing the collection for better preservation conditions.
