The Dan Gerber papers contain holographic copies, typescript drafts and published versions of articles, books, essays, galley proofs, personal journals, notebooks, novels, poems and stories. Also included is personal and professional correspondence, research and personal memorabilia, and Gerber's collection of works by other writers and artists.

Biographical / Historical

Dan Gerber was born August 12, 1940 and grew up in Fremont, Michigan. He earned a B.A. in English from MSU in 1962 and for a short stint became a professional racing driver. He is a poet, novelist, and essayist whose work includes The Revenant (1971), American Atlas (1973), Grass Fires (1987), A Voice From the River (1990), A Last Bridge Home (1992), and Trying To Catch the Horses (1999). His articles, poems, and stories have appeared in The Nation, The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, and The Georgia Review. From 1968 through 1972, along with writer Jim Harrison, he co-edited the literary magazine Sumac. Gerber has traveled extensively as a journalist. He has been writer-in-residence at Michigan State University and Grand Valley State University and has lectured, read, and taught at numerous colleges, universities, libraries, schools, and museums throughout the United States and England. He has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, won the 1992 Michigan Author Award, and has had work selected for The Best American Poetry 1999.

The Dan Gerber papers are arranged into five series: Series 1: Published and written works by Dan Gerber include holographic copies and typescripts of his numerous articles, books, essays, galley proofs, personal journals, notebooks, novels, poems and stories. Series 2: Correspondence includes personal, correspondence related to his readings around the country, publisher correspondence and email/fax correspondence. Series 3: Works by Others: including poems, articles, cards, prints and other memorabilia collected by Gerber Series 4: Personal Files contain Gerber family history, awards, interviews, publicity and promotion of his readings and works and other miscellaneous memorabilia. Series 5: Research Works include books, magazine articles, photographs, maps, and reference materials Gerber used in writing his books and articles.

Gift of Dan Gerber in 2005 with additional accruals ongoing.
