Scope and Contents

The Ku Klux Klan documents collection is comprised of letters, pamphlets, flyers, applications and petitions for membership, as well as pictures, and a Ku Klux Klan robe. Most of the material in this collection dates from the late 1920s and the 1950s, and primarily covers the Klan in New York and North Carolina.

Biographical / Historical

The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan was founded in Louisiana in 1956. It was started as an organization of white protestant Americans who at that time used violence against all other groups. In 1975 David Duke founded the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in an attempt to put a less violent face on the Klan.
