Paulo R. Gordillo papers
Scope and Contents
The Paulo R. Gordillo papers consists of materials supporting the naming of a Lansing city street to commemorate Cesar E. Chavez’s life and work on behalf of the agricultural worker in the United States. The contents include documents, news clippings and correspondence on: Cesar Chavez Day 1995; the Committee for Cesar Chavez Avenue; various news articles on Lansing area issues including the Q -106 radio program on a controversial 5° de Mayo radio broadcast and a resulting “Media and Community Relations Summit” as well as biographical information on Gordillo. The collection also includes a city street sign bearing the name “Cesar Chavez Ave. N. 800 - 700."

Biographical / Historical
Student and civic organizer and a life long Lansing resident, Gordillo took the lead in commemorating United Farm Worker union President and organizer Cesar E. Chavez upon his death by having a street named in his honor. Chavez was a frequent visitor to the Lansing Michigan area where he found support for the unions boycott campaigns. Gordillo graduated from and is employed at Michigan State University working with K-12 pre-college programs. He has served as adjunct faculty at Lansing Community College and Davenport University teaching communication and higher education learning skills.
