Biographical / Historical
Gilbert Salazar (1936-2012), a retired business owner and Lansing resident, was respected highly for his commitment to organizing, promoting, and developing Latin American League sports in mid-Michigan. Salazar, a competitive athlete, also participated as member of several city and Latin American league championship teams. From 1970-1989, Salazar had a sports byline in El Renacimiento, Lansing's longest printed community newspaper. He spent a significant amount of time collecting and documenting the early years of Latino organized sports in the Lansing area (1950-1969). He also photographed Lansing leagues and teams from the mid-1960s to 2000. Individual team sports such as boxing and wrestling were also a key interest. The Salazar materials were donated by Noé Hernandez and Gilbert Salazar Jr. in the fall of 2012. Hernandez was Gilbert Salazar Sr.'s co-author of "Lansing's Latin American Leagues: A History in the Making" (2000). This book used several of the pictures and articles from the collection.
