Biographical / Historical
The struggle of American and immigrant farm workers for fair wages, work place conditions and labor contracts are well represented in the collection with inclusion of United Farm Worker decals. The UFW union logo (black eagle designed by Richard Chavez) features prominently in many of them, as well as key phrases used in labor rhetoric. Included is an example of an early decal printed for the UFWOC [Bumper Sticker 82.] The UFWOC was formed by the merging of the Filipino labor union, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) - led by organizer Larry Itliong - and the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), led by Cesar E. Chavez, a largely Mexican American labor organization. Included in the decal collection are a significant number of radio station decals from the Julio C. Guerrero Papers. Guerrero's career included labor organizing, communications and academia. It was during his time as an organizer that Cesar E. Chavez asked Guerrero to help establish a radio station for the UFW. KUFW was established in 1983. Decals from other manuscript material donations are included providing a broader array of Chicana/o and Latina/o decals with social and political messages and slogans as well as design styles. Decals removed from the collections of Rudy Reyes [MSS 300], Julio Guerrero [MSS 520], Gilberto V and Minerva T Martinez [MSS 389] are noted by their manuscript numbers.
