The Milawaukee Metropolitan Sewage District was founded in 1921, as an effort with the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee to recognized and bring solutions to the Milwaukee polluted rivers. The issues on how to protect the waterways began in 1913, when the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee was established due to politics surrounding pollution in the rivers. In 1914, the sewerage commission experimented with a new approach for wastewater treatment involving micrscopic organisms-the activated sludge method. In 1926, Milogranite was created in Milwaukee, that is a slow realease of Nitrogen Fertilizer. Milogranite recycles the wastewater captured by the district than uses the nutrient-rich microbes to turn into fertilizer that works on lawns, gardens, flowers, trees, and shrubs. The Milwaukee Metro Sewage District collection includes experiments and offical documents transferred from Milwaukee on the activation of sludge and Milogranite.
