Biographical / Historical

Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA and later renamed MEXA) at the Michigan State University was a political student organization first established in 1968 to encourage cultural pride, dignity, and unity among students; to further educational standards and opportunities; and to establish an awareness and sensitivity of Chicano values to the entire student body. MEXA (Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan) was active in the early 1990's through the second decade of the 2000s. The organization was registered as a student organization some years and other years operated as a community organization. Their focus was supporting the UFW Grape Boycott, establishing a Chicano Studies Program and recruitment of Chicano undergraduate and graduate students and faculty. In 1971, the organization changed the name from MEChA to ChiSPA, Chicano Students for Progressive Action and later to Chicano Students for Progress Alliance through the early 1990s.
