Scope and Contents

This collection represents the entirety of paper and photographic material saved by Winifred Galloway at the end of her life. Documents cover her entire lifespan, and include notes from her undergraduate education at the University of Wycoming, documentation of her time in the Peace Corps and of her doctorate at Indiana University, and many pre-publication drafts and notes from her time working in the Gambia. The collection also has documents related to her life after her return to the United States in 1984, particularly as concerns job searching at various points. The collection has several photographs and many slides of her time in Australia and Africa, as well as some slides from Europe and many from Wycoming. Of note are the many maps annotated by Galloway related to her work conducting oral histories and studying the peoples of the Gambia.

Biographical / Historical

Winifred Galloway was born in Torrington, WY, on September 23, 1938. She received her BA in American Studies from the University of Wyoming in 1961, and studied abroad on a Fulbright Fellowship in Melbourne, Australia in 1962. She returned to the University of Wyoming for a graduate degree in American Studies, after which she became an early Peace Corps volunteer in Nigeria (1964 to 1966). She returned to the United States to teach US History and World History at Indiana University, where she also studied for her doctorate in African History, which she earned in 1972. Her fieldwork was in the Gambia, and she returned there after graduation to work for the Oral History and Antiquities Division of the Vice President's Office, where she worked closely with B. K. Sidibe, with whom she co-authored several publications. She returned to the United States in 1984 and passed away in Wyoming in 2015.

The collection was received in no discernable order. The collection now loosely follows a chronological order of paper materials, with separate sub-series for maps and photographs.

The collection was donated Winifred Galloway's estate in 2016.
