Biographical / Historical
The James Tiptree, Jr. Award was founded in 1991 to honor Alice Sheldon (1915-1987), a pioneering woman science fiction writer who broke preconceptions of writing being inherently "male" or "female." (James Tiptree, Jr. was a pseudonym used by Sheldon in her writings.) It is an annual award given to a work of science fiction or fantasy published during the year which explores or expands gender roles. The Award was founded by Pat Murphy and Karen Joy Fowler and consists of a panel of five judges to discuss the gender-bending fiction published in the previous year. The annual prize is $1,000 and a chocolate typewriter, funded through bake sales, and is awarded at the world's only feminist science fiction convention, WISCON.
