Biographical / Historical

Rebecca Arenas was a Chicana activist born in Crystal City Texas. Her family was among the first Mexican American agricultural migrant families to settle in Holland in the early 1940s. She graduated from Holland High School and based her activism in the City of Holland, Ottawa County Michigan. She married and ran for several local and state offices, was appointed to commissions and received several awards in her married name Rebecca Rivera, until her name change back to Arenas in the 1990s. She was a member of the Democratic party and was active in political, community and church organizations in leadership positions. As a community activist, her expertise and advocacy was in voter education and registration, women, students, immigrants and agricultural migrant workers.
