Scope and Contents
This collection consists of commercial music CDs from Sony BMG from 2005. Each has one of two software programs: Extended Copy Protection or MediaMax CD-3 which Sony BMG implemented as a copy protection measure.

Biographical / Historical
In the mid-2000s, Sony BMG implemented software such as Extended Copy Protection and MediaMax CD-3 on their CDs as a form of copy protection. When a user plays the CD on a computer, the software installs onto the user’s computer and modifies the operating system to restrict CD copying. Often users did not realize that it was installed because it uses a cloaking function to prevent anit-virus software from detecting them and the software was not easily to uninstall

The collection was acquired approximately in 2014 as part of the ROVI collection.
Processing Information
Media Preservation Librarian Sarah Mainville identified these CDs has having a distinctive DRM software and separated them from the main ROVI circulating collection.
Lydia Tang created the finding aid, with assistance from Sarah Mainville and other Special Collections student assistants in 2019.
