Biographical / Historical

Happendance is an East Lansing-based modern dance company founded in June 1976 by Diane Newman. At the time of its founding, it was the only modern dance company in the area. It has been supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts, Greater Lansing Area Dance Council, Modern Dance Workshop, and Michigan State University. It frequently performed original choreography in outdoor venues and local schools. Diane Newman earned a B. A. (minor in dance) and M. A. from Michigan State University. In addition to founding Happendance, she teaches ballet and modern dance, coaches competitive ice skating, is a freelance choreographer, and managed her family's dancewear store.
