Scope and Contents

This collection holds research subject files kept by René Hugo Arceo on various domestic and international projects and exhibits he has participated in as artist/printmaker, curator, or arts activist. Includes materials related to the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago, Illinois), El Taller Mexicano de Grabado, Casa Michoacan, Carlos Cortes Koyokuikatl, 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios, Alas de Papel project, Bajo un Mismo Cielo, Zalce: Tiempo y Testimonio and Day of the Dead exhibitions and history. Many of the files relate to research Arceo conducted while curating exhbitions during his thirteen years at the National Museum of Mexican Art (formerly known as the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum) in Chicago, Illinois. Curatorial files contain items such as research notes, brochures, invitations, correspondence and lists of works related to each event. Also included are artists' resumes, artists' statements, and articles whose topics range from Chicago murals to Mexican migrants and border issues to Mexican folk arts such as weaving, lacquering, and wood carving. Other items include images, magazines, catalogs, and other published works (e.g. articles on Mexican and Latino American artists and their work, instructions and techniques of printmaking).

Biographical / Historical

René Hugo Arceo was born in 1959 in Mexico. A painter and printmaker, he graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985. While still in school, he co-founded the Galeria Ink Works. While working for the Mexican Fine Arts Center Musueum in Chicago (now known as the National Museum of Mexican Art) from 1986 -1999 he curated numerous exhibitions. In 1990, he co-founded the printmakers’ collective Taller Mexicano de Grabado (Mexican Printmaking Workshop). He is a member of the Asociacion de Artistas Michoacanos de USA, Federación de Clubes Michoacanos de Illinois, Chicago Artists Coalition and Expressions Graphics of Oak Park, IL. He has been exhibiting his work in both solo and group shows regularly all over the world, most prominently in Mexico and the U.S. He has received numerous awards, including the Illinois Arts Council's Governor's International Arts Exchange Program award and his works are in public collections both in the U.S. and Mexico.

Abstract

The items contained in this collection chronicle a period of Arceo's artistic career, his work as a curator for Chicago's National Museum of Mexican Art, as well as his involvement with individuals and institutions on promoting Latino American art and Mexican art in the greater Chicago area and beyond.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged in two series: Series 1. subject files as they were kept by Rene Arceo: alphabetically by artist/institution/event or subject matter. Series 2. Rene Arceo career materials as collected and added to the papers by Arceo and JS Library.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was transferred from the Julian Samora Library at the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame to MSU Special Collections in 2019.

Processing Information

Lydia Tang and Cathy Gibson imported the finding aid in 2019. Chiayi Tsui and Tracy Grimm processed the collection at UND in 2012. The original collection identifier was MS.2005.1.
