Biographical / Historical

This series of 26 photographic prints were collected by the Gurevich family in the mid-2000s.

Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was a documentary photojournalist who captured the injustices of the world through his lens. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish parents of Eastern European descent, Freed began taking photographs in the Netherlands in 1953. He returned to the United States and studied in Alexei Brodovitch’s “design laboratory”. Freed moved to the Netherlands in 1958 where he studied and photographed the Jewish community. His book on Jews in Germany was published in 1961, but it was his coverage of the American civil rights movement that made him famous. He produced numerous works on Poland, Asian Immigration, among others.
