To pass the censors, the cards were inoculated with light-hearted humor as well as some risqué humor. The cards represent a wide range of patriotic themes including the physical dangers, probable lack of food, interactions with superiors, and encounters with the opposite sex.

According to the vendor from whom the photographs were purchased, two larger photos were taken by the commercial photographer Barnett, which appear to show the Great Dynamite Explosion of February 19, 1896, at Braamfontein.
