Scope and Contents This collections consists primarily of Civil War letters from William, Henry, and Uriah Arnold. William enlisted in the 1st Michigan Cavalry, which served in the eastern campaigns. After the war, the regiment was sent west to protect settlers from the Indians; William wrote from Kansas and Utah, complaining that the Army had forgotten his regiment. Douglass Watkins collection

This collection contains an advertisement and a newspaper article about the Cardiff Giant Hoax (1869). George Hull of Binghamton, New York, carved a stone giant and buried it in a field near Syracuse, New York. When it was dug up, it was proclaimed to be a petrified prehistoric man even by scientists of the day. Hull and his partners profited from exhibiting the giant before their hoax was discovered.

The collection also contains a biographical sketch on Abraham Lincoln.

Frederick G. Adler papers

These papers consist of correspondence (1896-1908), a coroner's inquest book (1890-1893), newspaper clippings, and campaign and election materials of Frederick G. Adler of Jackson, Michigan.

Also included are a Jackson County Circuit Court calendar for September 1903, and a memo book belonging to Adler with a typewritten explanation of some of the entries by his son, Gar A. Adler.

Newton Thorne Kirk papers

Written between 1907 and 1909, this account was based on a war diary of Kirk's service with Company E, 26th Michigan Infantry.
